The Pouilly-Fuissé

E
ight kilometers (5 miles) from Mâcon and 16km (10 miles) from Cluny lies the jewel of the Maconnais, the celebrated white wine vineyard of Pouilly-Fuissé. This is probably the most ancient white vineyard in Burgundy;

Chardonnay, the noble grape variety of all the great white wines of Burgundy, is the only one grown on this vineyard, in which there are many variations in soil.

These in turn allow the grape to show a variety of characteristics.

The Château de Pouilly is in the midst of five villages – Vergisson, Solutré, Pouilly, Fuissé, Chaintré – in the production area, which extends over 780 hectares, with 250 main producers.

T
he borders of this vineyard were formally fixed in 1936, the year in which the AOC system (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) was created, with the aim of preserving the character and authenticity which had made it legendary.
